There may be a number of reasons why you are planning to hold a memorial ceremony. It may be instead of a funeral where there is no burial or cremation (for example if someone has donated their body for medical research or was lost at sea), or where the person opted for direct cremation, and so there was no funeral associated with this. Alternatively, perhaps the funeral was for family members only or too far away for some people to get to. It may be you wish to commemorate a particular anniversary of the loss of a loved one or to remember and honour a group of people. A short memorial service is also sometimes held when scattering the ashes of a love one.
