The Unity Coin Ceremony has its roots in the Hispanic Christian Arras Ceremony. Each coin represents the elements of a successful marriage: Love, Trust, Commitment, Respect, Joy, Happiness, Harmony, Wisdom, Wholeness, Nurturing, Caring, Cooperation and Peace.
The ritual is a way to symbolise the couple’s trust in each other and their commitment to share the responsibility of managing the household finances. It is also said that each coin represents prosperity for each month of the year, with a little extra to spare. Additionally, the odd number is not dividable, just as a strong marriage should be.
How the ceremony is actually performed will depend to some extent upon the meaning a couple want to give to the ritual. For example the couple might take it in turns to read the word on each coin, with the 13th coin being read together. Alternatively it could be a way to involve friends and family who place coins in the box as they make wishes for the couple.
