The death cafe movement has been growing over the last few years. It’s stated objective is: “to increase awareness of death with a view to helping people make the most of their (finite) lives’.
A death cafe an event where people drink tea, eat cake and discuss death. At a Death Cafe people drink tea, eat cake and discuss death. Our aim is to increase awareness of death to help people make the most of their (finite) lives.
The concept originated in Switzerland (‘cafe mortel’), but has since spread to a number of other countries, including France, the USA and the UK.
Death cafes can be set up by anyone. There is a suggested ‘model’, which includes having someone in the role of facilitator and certain ground rules. A death cafe is intended to be a place for people to talk about death. It is not about grief, nor is it a platform for debate. Participants are expected to listen to others, contributing themselves if they wish to, although there is no expectation.
Talking about death is not something that comes easily to many of us. Yet the consequence of this is that often families are left not knowing the wishes of their loved one as they near the end of their lives or after they have passed away.
Death cafes tend to ‘pop up’ for specific events rather than being held regularly, so it worth keeping an eye on local and social media to see if there is one happening soon near you.
